Produced in collaboration with Jamie Shaw for the exhibition "Going into Business" at Protein Gallery. Due to the particular conditions of recent economic growth, low cost of labour, relaxed planning laws and widespread nous, DIY supermarkets in Poland are booming with a fecundatity which is absent from those in Western Europe. The spread of products from multicolour bathroom silicone to air conditioning grates that can be printed with an image of your children puts the paltry offer of a B&Q to shame.
These products which are deeply standardised and systemised are the raw materials of a contemporary vernacular, they contain amazing technological advances but also bizarre cultural tropes. How can we exploit these materials to produce new objects from another realm than the marching walls of magnolia paintjobs?
